Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit. Ugadi is the Lunar New Year’s Day for the people in India. The date of Ugadi is based on calculations of the position of the moon dating back to the 12th century. Ugadi begins on the first new moon after the Spring Equinox. Ugadi is celebrated the next morning as an Indian day starts at sunrise.This date usually falls in late March or early April in the western calendar and this date moon signifies a change in the seasons and essentially means Ugadi is a spring festival.

The name Yugadi or Ugadi is derived from the Sanskrit words yuga (age) and ādi (starting) the beginning of a new age.

On Ugadi, two very special sacred fire ceremonies, Ganesha homam  (homam to remove any impediments on your way of success, as well as bring in luck and prosperity for you in the Vedic New Year) and Maha Lakshmi homam (homam to receive the blessings and grace of Goddess Lakshmi to bestow prosperity and wealth to you in the Vedic New Year).

Ugadi is regarded as the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit. It is believed that the creator according to Hinduism, Lord Brahma started his work of creation on the Chaitra suddha padhyami (Ugadi). It is also considered that everyone has the right to attain Peace, Prosperity, Health, Wealth and Happiness and this can be done through the festival of Ugadi. Everyone has to change him or herself by replacing the vices with good virtues with the help of Spiritual or Godly knowledge.
